4.10.2012 New patient clinic rehearsals
We were encouraged to observe each other and give to the lead student feedback in order to practice for the new patient clinic that is run in weeks 3-5 of the autumn term. Mine new patient slot is booked for 11.10.2012. Good luck!
8.10.2012 Verbal feedback from my clinic tutor P.S.
I had today two fist year students observing me while treating a female patient that arrived with her 1 year old son. The room was hot, patient was just recovering from a flu, baby was strapped in the buggy and was asking for the attention. When my tutor came into the room the child started to cry, patient getting off the plinth to comfort her baby......., in that noise I tried to explain to the tutor what was going on... simply it was too hot and too much happening in one small treatment room for tutor to comprehend and hear what I was banging about. I treated the Pt with 3 HVTs that seemed to help to relieve the symptoms while tutor was in a treatment room and we finished appointment at the same time.
Afterwards my tutor gave me feedback on my performance. He suggested to ask the patient to try to come without the child. He does it in his private practice all the time as he believes the patient needs to concentrate for the treatment and so does the practitioner for 100% so any additional distractions in the room just devalue the session. Other point of feedback was regarding my presentation. He asked me to be more concise as I have a tendency to talk about findings and treatment plan in a small detail which can be overwhelming.

9.10.2012 Verbal feedback from my clinic tutor M.S.
I was today told that when my tutor comes into the treatment room and I present to them the examination findings, I am supposed to treat the patient at the same time. I have heard this from this tutor before and I would find it as a fair request only when it is the case I am treating the patient in a way that does not request my concentration and communication between the patient and I (which would be totally unexceptable I think). My tutor overtook the treatment and showed me a sidelying technique with gentle harmonic rocking while soft tissueing the LES, TES, rhomboids... well I told him that I already did that treatment and I really needed to communicate to my patient to be more relaxed if I wanted to give her effective treatment for her shoulder without hurting her so I rather stopped treating her to talk to the tutor. I was told that treating while presenting is a request for CCAs exams and I need to get to used to it. I am disappointed that all my current effort is supposed to go towards good CCAs results and not as much to improvement of the delivery and effectiveness of treatment. I think that we are learning for life and not for CCAs.
End of the term 1 feedback
It was a teary end of the term. I felt completely knackered, over stressed, and as i was sitting there in front of the tutors giving me feedback, i felt so small and incompetent. I could only read and hear negative comments, not being able to notice anything postivive about my performance. the areas i need to build on are autonomy and specificity of the techniques. I was told to take xmas holiday as time to completely relax and recharge batteries. and also each time after seeing patient to write down three positive things about how it went. :-)
End of the term 2 feedback
It seems that the issues are the same. Lack of autonomy and making decisions by myself. If only they knew what is my life like gerenerally!
